An abdominal aortic aneurysm occurs when part of the aorta becomes enlarged due to weakening of the artery wall. An AAA may develop without noticeable symptoms, making screening important for people who meet recommended risk criteria.
Screening may be recommended based on age, smoking history, and family history. In particular, one-time screening is recommended for men ages 65–75 who have ever smoked. Other factors that may be considered include:
You will lie on your back while a sonographer applies gel to your abdomen. An ultrasound transducer is moved across the abdominal area to view the aorta and measure its size. The examination is painless, non-invasive, and does not use radiation.
