An arterial Doppler ultrasound is a non-invasive test that uses ultrasound to evaluate blood flow through the arteries. It helps detect narrowed or blocked arteries and assess circulation, particularly in the‍ arms and legs.

What Is an Arterial Doppler Ultrasound?

This test combines ultrasound imaging with Doppler technology to examine the arteries and measure blood flow. It can help identify reduced circulation caused by narrowing, plaque‍ buildup,‌ or blockages and is‌ commonly used when peripheral artery disease‍ (PAD‌) is suspected‌.

When Is‌ the Test Needed?

Your provider may recommend an arterial Doppler ultrasound if you have:

  • Leg pain or cramping while walking
  • Cold feet or lower legs
  • Poor circulation
  • Slow- healing wounds
  • Suspected PAD
  • Vascular risk factors such‍ as diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, or smoking history

How Is the Test Performed?

You will lie comfortably while a sonographer applies gel to the area being examined. A handheld ultrasound transducer is gently moved over‌ the skin to create images of the arteries and evaluate blood flow. The test is painless, noninvasive, and does not use radiation.

Benefits

  • Evaluates arterial blood flow
  • Helps detect narrowing or blockages
  • Supports PAD evaluation
  • Non-invasive and painless
  • No radiation exposure
